Upper V Geography Fieldwork

Studying Coastal Management.

On Thursday 13th September Upper V Geographers, accompanied by Head of Geography Mr Chappory, travelled to Cuckmere Haven in East Sussex to study whether or not the Cuckmere River follows the normal flow patterns expected of all rivers.

Mr Chappory relates, ‘the main discovery was that the River Cuckmere has been heavily managed by people so that the meanders no longer flow.  Because the site is in the South Downs National Park, and therefore has chalk geology, there are no visible tributaries as they have all sunk underground.  The fieldwork also provided a link to coastal erosion as the visit ended at Beachy Head, by the mouth of the River Cuckmere.

This work was invaluable in extending the understanding of Upper V of river landscapes and was enjoyed by all.’
