Prep III meets Florence Nightingale

Posted: 22nd March 2019

A journey through History.

Mrs Lubowiecka, Form Teacher Prep III, this week accompanied her Form as they travelled back in time to meet Florence Nightingale (1820 – 1910), the founder of modern nursing who came to prominence during the Crimean War (1853 – 1856).  This encounter took place at the Gunnersbury Park Museum.  Mrs Lubowiecka takes up the story…

‘The girls in Prep III have been very engaged in their History topic, Florence Nightingale, this term and many have conducted research at home that they have then enthusiastically shared with the class. We were therefore very excited about our visit to meet Florence Nightingale at Gunnersbury Park Museum on Tuesday 19th March.

Firstly we enjoyed the ‘Life in the Victorian Kitchen’ session and Prep III donned Victorian clothing and undertook many of the tasks necessary to the efficient running of a kitchen in a big house.  From beating the carpets and washing the floors to cooking and doing the washing up, Prep III entered enthusiastically into all aspects of Victorian life.

After this Miss Nightingale, in full costume, met us and regaled us with her life story. Again, Prep III enjoyed dressing in the costumes that brought to life Miss Nightingale’s role in the Crimean War when she cared for the wounded soldiers.  The girls all looked amazing in the costumes and played the roles, from soldier to surgeon, Miss Nightingale gave them and enjoyed using the artefacts to help them act out her life story.’

Strengthening Our Community: The Return of Boys to our Preps and Pre-Preps

We are excited to share that, from September 2026, boys will begin moving up from our Nursery into Reception, marking the gradual reintroduction of boys into our Prep and Pre-Prep School.

This step reflects growing interest from families who value our strong holistic ethos and unique grounds and setting and would like their sons and daughters to share their educational journey together.

At St Augustine’s, our strong sense of community, academic excellence, and deep care for each individual child remain at the heart of everything we do. This is a natural evolution of our school rather than a change to who we are, building on our strengths and allowing us to offer the same joyful, inspiring education to even more children.
